Zunda park
Par
Residential design for active and social city dwellers.
PROJECT BRIEF
The Zunda Parks project was created for an international competition focused on developing historical territories. On the sketches of REM PRO in collaboration with AKETURI, the empty 8-hectare lot on Daugavgrivas Street 31 in Riga was transformed into a modern district with biophilic architecture, complete with residential and commercial buildings, complemented by an appealing urban setting for drivers, pedestrians, and their furry friends.
PROJECT DETAILS
The left bank of the Zunda Canal in Riga has been an attraction for active Pardaugava residents since the 17th century. As time passed, life in the area came to a standstill and the neighborhood turned into a wasteland, despite its proximity to the center of Riga. REM PRO took on the challenge of reviving the project as a place with a living history in a comfortable urban district perfect for smart and energetic residents looking for a balanced life in Riga.
For architects, life in Zunda Parks is active and social, with internal infrastructure and local urban environments designed to fit such a lifestyle. Despite the dark facades outside, each room inside is flooded with natural light. In addition to walking and sports areas, there are also spaces for peaceful relaxation by the promenade.
PROJECT OUTCOMES
The 3D model of the quarter was assessed by an international panel of architects and urban planners from Latvia, Lithuania, Great Britain, and the Netherlands, as well as representatives of local governments and professional communities. Among many participants, Zunda’s REM PRO x AKETURI vision was awarded second place.
