How inclusivity contributes to the freedom of science

PROJECT BRIEF

Another point of attraction for science on the map of Riga is the building of the Riga East Clinical Student Hospital, where the Stradins University of Riga conducts medical classes. Architects have developed a reconstruction project for three floors to convert them into interactive classrooms. Part of the third floor has been redesigned to accommodate lecture halls, conference rooms, teacher’s offices, simulation rooms, bathrooms, and technical areas.

PROJECT DETAILS

The education design is spacious and well-lit thanks to the carefully chosen materials. Glass partitions, which are customized according to each classroom’s needs, separate the corridors from the classrooms. The teacher’s offices feature a mirror coating, while the general student classrooms are equipped with frosted glass.

In our projects, we make education physically accessible. We have installed an elevator and lift, and incorporated bright, contrasting indicators on both the ramp and staircase. Contrasting and brightly lit signs and banners are provided to ensure visibility of entrances. We use contrasting decorative materials for doors, floors, and other elements along evacuation routes. Tactile (Braille) floor numbers are also positioned on staircase handrails. Conference and lecture halls are equipped with an acoustic loop to prevent noise interference for people with hearing impairments.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

We believe that a barrier-free environment for people with motor, hearing, or vision impairments makes scientific achievements barrier-free. That is why REM PRO designs educational spaces that are both convenient and visually open.
