How we introduced green innovations to the Innovation center
PROJECT BRIEF
The Daugavpils Innovation Center lives in the building of a former cinema, which was built in 1978 and has not been restored since that time. The structure on 30 Vienibas Street in Daugavpils managed to host three cinemas and a scientific and entertainment center within its walls. The original architecture of the building is considered a local landmark, although it isn’t officially recognized as an architectural monument. Nevertheless, architectural and engineering decisions on the project were made for the sake of preserving the artistic value of the building due to its rich background.
PROJECT DETAILS
The building has been preserved in pretty good condition (45%) over the years of existence, but consumed a lot of electricity. We believe in the concept of a «green» city, so for this project we used an approach of green building design and increased the energy efficiency of the building with solar panels installed on the roof. In addition, on the basis of the project, the facade, roof and walls inside were insulated, windows, doors, hatches and lighting were updated, as well as heating, water supply and ventilation systems were re-equipped.
The former cinema halls have been converted into an exposition of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) in a new bright interior. Other rooms have become studios for medicine, biology, robotics, film history classes, creative spaces and a conference room for seminars.
PROJECT OUTCOMES
We have created a living environment in which children and adults will be curious about the structure of the world and this particular building. The Daugavpils Innovation Center welcomes go-getters and talented people, for whom we were lucky enough to develop such an infrastructure in which they can create and think outside the box.
